Quick answer: Token gated events use blockchain to restrict access so only holders of specific crypto tokens—like NFTs or ERC-20 tokens—can enter, attend, or participate. To set up a token gated event, you’ll (1) choose which token grants access, (2) set up wallet-based authentication, (3) define entry rules (such as owning one or more tokens), and (4) integrate the gate into your event platform or venue. No-code options such as DexAppBuilder let you deploy event gating logic, wallets, and contracts visually—no Solidity required.

What Are Token Gated Events?

A token gated event is any gathering—virtual or physical—where entry is restricted to holders of a specific cryptocurrency token. Instead of traditional ticketing or password-based access, blockchain technology verifies attendees’ eligibility. This verification is done by checking if a user’s connected wallet holds a required token, such as a non-fungible token (NFT) or a specified amount of a fungible token (like an ERC-20).

The key idea: ownership of a digital asset becomes your ticket. For example, a music festival might let only certain NFT holders access backstage, or a virtual conference might grant entry only to wallets holding a unique membership token.

Token gating is a subset of broader “token gating” practices in Web3, where blockchain assets unlock exclusive content, services, or access—see our for a full overview.

Examples in the Wild

Music festival: Only wallets holding a special NFT can unlock backstage passes and artist meetups.
Virtual conference: Only attendees with a specific ERC-20 token in their wallet can join premium sessions.
Art gallery opening: Entry is verified at the door by having a limited edition NFT ticket in your wallet.
Online community town hall: DAO members gain video call access by holding governance tokens.

This model is gaining traction because it solves real problems in security, exclusivity, and community engagement.

Benefits of Token Gating for Events

Token gating isn’t just a tech novelty—it solves several persistent problems in event management and opens new opportunities. Let’s break down the main benefits.

Enhanced Security and Fraud Prevention

Traditional ticketing systems are plagued by fraud, scalping, and unauthorized resale. QR codes and PDFs can be copied or counterfeited. Token gated events, on the other hand, rely on blockchain-based verification:

Immutable ownership: Only wallets that actually own the required token can gain access.
No fake tickets: Tokens are unique and cannot be duplicated.
Real-time verification: At the door or virtual login, attendees connect their wallet. The system checks the blockchain for token ownership—not a database entry that can be manipulated.
Transferability (when intended): If you want tickets to be transferable, you control that by designing the token’s rules (e.g., NFTs can be resold, or locked to original buyers).

This approach cuts down on fraud and makes life easier for event organizers and attendees alike.

Exclusive Access and Community Building

Token gating creates a natural sense of exclusivity and belonging. People who own a particular token are part of a club—whether that’s an NFT art collective, a DAO, or just early fans of an artist.

Tiered experiences: You can create multiple access levels (e.g., general admission vs. VIP) by requiring different tokens.
Community rewards: Loyal token holders can be rewarded with special experiences, early access, or private sessions.
On-chain proof: Attendees can prove participation after the fact, enabling new types of reputation and loyalty systems.

For example, a DAO might host regular member-only town halls, or a music label could reward NFT holders with surprise concerts.

Monetization and Revenue Opportunities

Token gated events unlock new monetization models:

Token sales as tickets: NFTs or fungible tokens can be sold as tickets. These might appreciate in value, giving early buyers a perk.
Secondary markets: If tickets are NFTs, they can be resold on open marketplaces, with creators earning royalties on each transfer.
Bundled perks: Event access can be bundled with other digital goods—like music, art, or merchandise.
Membership models: Instead of selling one-off tickets, you can sell tokens that grant ongoing access to a series of events.

This flexibility can help creators and organizers build sustainable revenue streams and reward their most engaged supporters.

Common Approaches to Implementing Token Gated Events

How do you actually set up a token gated event? The landscape ranges from developer-first SDKs to visual no-code builders. Let’s explore the main approaches and their trade-offs.

Auth SDKs and Wallet Connectors

Auth SDKs (Software Development Kits) and wallet connectors are developer tools that let you integrate wallet-based authentication and token checks into your website or app.

Privy: Offers embedded wallets and social login, making it easier for users to onboard without MetaMask or similar wallets. You still need to code your event logic and user interface.
Dynamic: Focuses on multi-wallet authentication and flexible onboarding. It’s great for adding wallet connect options to your site, but it doesn’t provide a full event builder or token gating CMS.
WalletConnect (Reown), RainbowKit: These tools help users connect a wide range of wallets, but you’re responsible for checking token ownership and enforcing access.

When to use: If you have a developer team and want to tightly control the user experience, SDKs are powerful. But you’ll build much of the event logic and UI from scratch.

Trade-off: You get maximum flexibility, but higher complexity and longer build times.

No-Code and Low-Code Builders

No-code and low-code platforms let non-developers create token gated events using visual editors and pre-built components.

DexAppBuilder: Allows you to deploy wallet connections, token gating logic, and even NFT stores without writing code. You can visually set up which tokens grant access, design your event landing page, and publish across multiple blockchains.
Thirdweb: Offers embeddable widgets and contract templates. While it’s developer-oriented, some workflows can be assembled by non-coders, especially for simple gating.
Moralis: Provides APIs and some low-code tools for token and NFT data, but full event UI assembly may require additional work.

When to use: If you want to launch quickly, don’t have Solidity or frontend developers, or want to experiment before scaling up.

Trade-off: You may give up some advanced customization, but you get speed and accessibility.

Custom Development for Complex Use Cases

For organizations with unique requirements, building a custom solution is sometimes necessary.

Hardhat/Foundry + React: This approach gives you full control over smart contracts, wallet integration, and event UX. You can implement complex logic, integrate with physical access systems, or build entirely new event formats.

When to use: Enterprise projects, highly custom events, or when integrating with legacy systems.

Trade-off: Requires a specialized team, longer development cycles, and higher costs. Not recommended for first-time or experimental events.

Approach Comparison Table

Method	Who it’s for	Speed to Launch	Customization	Code Required	Notable Tools	Honest Limitations
No-code/Visual Builder	Creators, marketers, non-dev teams	Fast	Moderate	No	DexAppBuilder	May lack ultra-fine control over UI/logic
Dev-first Widgets/SDKs	Web3 devs, startups, technical orgs	Medium	High	Yes	Thirdweb, Privy, Dynamic	Steeper learning curve, build UI/logic yourself
API/Backend-first	Data-focused teams, hybrid devs	Medium	Varies	Some	Moralis	UI assembly still needed; not event-specific
Full Custom Code	Enterprises, protocol builders, DAOs	Slowest	Highest	Yes	Hardhat/Foundry + React	Expensive, slow, requires deep expertise

Checklist: Setting Up Your First Token Gated Event

Define your event and access goals: Decide what kind of event you’re running (virtual, physical, hybrid) and who should have access.
Choose your gating token: Pick an NFT collection, ERC-20 token, or even create a new token specifically for the event.
Set up wallet-based authentication: Integrate a wallet connect flow so users can prove token ownership. Use SDKs, widgets, or a no-code builder.
Configure access rules: Decide if attendees need to hold a specific amount, a certain NFT, or be in a whitelist.
Build your event landing page: Use a no-code tool or custom site to present event details and handle wallet connections.
Test the gating logic: Try wallet connections and token checks yourself and with test users.
Communicate clearly: Make sure your audience knows what tokens are required, how to connect wallets, and where to get support.
Go live and monitor: Launch your event, monitor for issues, and be ready to support attendees with onboarding or troubleshooting.

FAQs About Token Gated Events

What is a token gated event?

A token gated event restricts access so only users holding a specific crypto token can attend or participate. Instead of using tickets or passwords, attendees connect their cryptocurrency wallet (like MetaMask or WalletConnect), and the system checks if they own the required NFT or ERC-20 token.

How do token gated events improve security?

They use blockchain verification to prevent ticket fraud and unauthorized entry. When an attendee connects their wallet, the system checks on-chain whether they own the necessary token. This makes it much harder to forge or duplicate tickets, since blockchain records are transparent and immutable.

Can I create token gated events without coding?

Yes, no-code builders enable creating token gated events using visual tools without writing smart contracts. For example, DexAppBuilder lets you visually configure wallet authentication, gating logic, and even NFT ticketing. This is ideal for creators, marketers, and event organizers without a developer background.

Which tokens can be used for gating events?

Both NFTs and fungible tokens can be used. For exclusive, one-of-a-kind access, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are popular—for example, a limited edition NFT ticket. For membership or broader access, fungible tokens like ERC-20s are common. The choice depends on your event’s exclusivity and goals. For more, see and .

What are common tools for token gated event implementation?

Popular tools include auth SDKs like Privy (for embedded wallets and social login), widget suites like Thirdweb (for embeddable Connect and Pay widgets), and custom developer frameworks such as Hardhat or Foundry (for full-code solutions). No-code platforms like DexAppBuilder can simplify the process further. For a detailed breakdown, see .

Are token gated events suitable for virtual and physical events?

Yes, token gating can secure access for both virtual events (like online conferences or webinars) and physical venues (such as concerts or gallery openings). For physical events, staff or hardware at the entrance can verify wallet ownership, often via QR code scanning or NFC tap, ensuring only valid token holders enter.
